About the name “SmallWonders”

Craig Smallwood

The name SmallWonders honors the memory of Craig Smallwood, PhD.

Craig was a respiratory therapist, bioengineer, and clinical researcher at Boston Children’s Hospital, where he also served as an Assistant Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School. His research focused on improving respiratory care and mechanical ventilation in critically ill infants and children, integrating deep expertise in respiratory physiology with clinical investigation, data analytics, and predictive decision-support tools to enhance bedside care and patient outcomes. He played a pivotal role in introducing high-frequency jet ventilation to Boston Children’s Hospital. His work helped advance the application of physiologic monitoring and ventilator data to better characterize disease states, personalize respiratory support, and inform clinical trials in pediatric and neonatal critical care. Through multidisciplinary collaboration, he influenced clinical practice, education, and research by bridging respiratory therapy, engineering, and data science. Beyond his scientific impact, Craig was a deeply valued and respected member of every team he joined—known for his compassion, generosity, and commitment to patients and colleagues—and, above all, he was a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished son.

Craig is remembered for both his significant scientific contributions and his collaborative spirit—values that underpin the SmallWonders research philosophy, which aims to support the development and labeling of precision diagnostics for neonates with cardiopulmonary compromise.
