The following studies within the Division of Gynecology are currently recruiting participants.

Metformin as a Treatment for Endometriosis Pain

This placebo-controlled randomized pilot study is looking at whether the diabetes drug metformin is an effective treatment for endometriosis-related pain. People ages 15 to 35 are eligible if they have received hormonal treatment for endometriosis but are still experiencing pain.

Glycemic Regulation as Endometriosis Adjunct Treatment (GREAT) Study

In this research study, we are testing a potential new therapy for endometriosis-associated pain. Please contact gynresearch@childrens.harvard.edu, or ask your provider, for more information.

Who can participate?

Anyone who is 15 to 35 years old, has surgically confirmed endometriosis, is using hormonal treatment for endometriosis, and is still experiencing endometriosis related pain.

If I want to participate, what happens during the study? How long does it take?

Participation includes being randomly assigned to one of two groups: metformin, a non-hormonal medication, or placebo pills that do not contain metformin. It will take approximately six months for you to complete this study, and you will receive up to $225 for study completion.

Will the study help me now?

Being in this study may help you right now because it may help with your endometriosis-related pain. When we finish this research, we hope that the information we learn from you will help improve the lives of future patients with endometriosis.

Who is conducting the study?

Dr. Jessica Shim at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Group Mindfulness-Based Therapy for Adolescent Endometriosis Patients

In this research study we are studying whether a type of group talk therapy is an effective treatment to help young people with endometriosis pain. Please contact gynresearch@childrens.harvard.edu, or ask your provider, for more information.

Who can participate?

Young people between 15 to 18 years old who:

  • Have surgically confirmed endometriosis
  • Are experiencing endometriosis-related pain
  • Receiving hormonal treatment for endometriosis at Boston Children’s Hospital
If I want to participate, what happens during the study? How long does it take?

You would join a group of other patients around your age in a weekly Zoom session to talk about your experiences with endometriosis. These sessions will occur once a week for seven weeks. You will be asked to complete questionnaires before and after each session, as well as at three and six months after finishing them.

Will the study help me now?

Being in this study may help you right now because it may help you cope with your endometriosis-related pain. When we finish this research, we hope that the information we learn from you will help improve the lives of future patients with endometriosis.
