The Division of Gynecology at Boston Children’s Hospital conducts research on gynecological conditions that are primarily seen in children and adolescents, including congenital differences that affect the structures of the reproductive tract. We hope to deepen our understanding of these and other conditions, ultimately leading to the development of new, more effective therapies to treat a wide range of gynecologic problems.

Our areas of research

Our clinicians perform research in a wide range of areas related to gynecologic health, including the following.

  • Endometriosis: We are studying multiple areas of endometriosis, including treatments for pelvic pain in adolescents; surgical care; and bone health, as well as potential markers to help enable earlier diagnosis of the condition.
  • Congenital anomalies: In collaboration with Boston Children’s Center for Congenital Abnormalities of the Reproductive Tract, we’re investigating many aspects of health related to these types of congenital anomalies.
  • Contraception: Some of our work examines the efficacy of provider counseling around hormonal contraception for young adult and adolescent patients.
  • Health disparities: Our researchers are looking at how social determinants of health and barriers to access affect the care of pediatric and adolescent gynecology patients.
  • Outcomes in people with variations in sex characteristics: This includes studies on hormonal and menstrual management, sexual health, gonadal management, and family building in people with intersex traits.
