Nosocomial Infection Oversight Committee (NIOC)
NIOC is a hospital-level committee that focuses on hospital-acquired infection surveillance and prevention in the hospital’s four Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and the oncology/stem cell transplant programs. NIOC’s multidisciplinary membership includes the Infection Prevention and Control Department, unit-based infection prevention nurses, and ICU nursing and physician leaders. NIOC continually optimizes infection prevention bundles, including those targeting ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and ventilator-associated events (VAE), central-line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI), surgical site infections (SSI), and catheter-associated UTI (CAUTI). In 2019, BCH saw a >50% drop in the CLABSI rate (centerline) based in large part on NIOC efforts. This was the first drop in the CLABSI centerline in more than 10 years.
