Research Overview

Dr. TalGeva's major clinical and research interests are multimodality imaging of congenital heart disease. His research has focused on the use of echocardiography and CMR to define quantitative functional and morphometric predictors of course and outcome in either native or postoperative congenital cardiac lesions.

Dr. Geva's major clinical and research interests focus on diagnostic imaging of congenital heart disease, including anatomic and functional assessment of complex malformations using a noninvasive multimodality approach. He established and developed the cardiac MRI program and was Chief of the Noninvasive Cardiac Imaging Division at Boston Children’s Hospital until I assumed the role of Department Chair in 2016.

His research has concentrated on the development of echocardiographic and cardiac MRI methods to define quantitative functional and morphometric predictors of course and outcomes in native and postoperative congenital cardiac lesions. More recently, his group’s research efforts have concentrated on 3 areas:

  1. Pathophysiology and outcome predictors in patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). Our group has published extensively on this topic and has led the international multicenter cohort (INDICATOR), which aims to identify risk factors for death and sustained ventricular tachycardia in late survivors of repaired TOF;
  2. Development of quantitative methods to assess the right ventricle in patients with congenital heart disease. This line of investigation is pursued through collaborations with biomedical engineers at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute; and
  3. Quality improvement in the domain of noninvasive imaging.

Research Background

Dr. Geva's group was the first to develop comprehensive methodology to identify and categorize diagnostic errors in congenital heart echocardiography and to publish it along with analysis of risk factors for clinically important errors. He has formally mentored 47 trainees and junior faculty in the past 21 years who have all published original research articles as first authors, and the majority of these trainees are now faculty in academic institutions in the US and abroad, including 5 directors of cardiovascular imaging laboratories and 6 division chiefs. He has been a member of the Extramural Advisory Committee for research training at Columbia Presbyterian, NY and received the Teaching Award from the American Society of Echocardiography. He is an author of more than 215 peer-reviewed original manuscripts, more than 100 chapters and editorials, and co-editor of the preeminent textbook on echocardiography in congenital heart disease.
