Research Overview

Dr. LaRovere’s pursuit of a career in the field of pediatric neurocritical care led to residencies and fellowships in the fields of pediatrics, pediatric neurology, adult vascular/critical care neurology and pediatric critical care medicine. She also has specific training and expertise in a cranial ultrasound technique known as transcranial doppler ultrasonography. Her clinical and research interests are in severe traumatic brain injury and the various applications of transcranial doppler ultrasonography in children with neurological disorders in the ICU setting.

Dr. LaRovere’s contributions to the field of neurocritical care include a description of the first pediatric neurocritical care consult service at Boston Children’s Hospital and the use of portable head CT imaging in the intensive care units at Boston Children’s Hospital. She served as site PI for the “PANGEA” study (Prevalence of Acute critical Neurological disease in children: a Global Epidemiological Assessment), which is an international multi-center point prevalence study to describe the epidemiology and gross outcomes of acute critical neurological disease in critically-ill children. She is currently the site PI for a study that examines cerebral blood flow in children using transcranial Doppler ultrasound who are receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). She is also a site PI for the “ADAPT” trial (Approaches and Decisions for Acute Pediatric TBI), which is a multi-center, international study to determine optimal management strategies for children with severe traumatic brain injury.

Research Background

Dr. LaRovere is the Director of the Neuroscience Intermediate Care Program, which is an intermediate care service for children with acute neurological and neurosurgical disorders.
