Research Overview

The goals of Dr. Lillehei's research are to:

  • define the risk factors for neonatal surgery
  • establish existing clinical outcomes and quality of life for children with inflammatory bowel disease and to establish means of improving these outcomes

Dr. Lillehei is active in the analysis of large administrative data sets to assess the risk factors for mortality in neonatal surgery. He is also involved in the prospective data collection and analysis of outcomes in children with inflammatory bowel disease requiring surgery, particularly those with ulcerative colitis undergoing colectomy and ileoanal pullthrough. He has been extremely active in transplantation, leading the Lung Transplant Program at Boston Children's Hospital and serving as faculty in programs for kidney and liver transplantation of infants and children.

Research Background

Dr. Lillehei received his MD degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed an internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and a fellowship in transplant immunology under Dr. Henry Winn at Massachusetts General Hospital. He completed his fellowship in pediatric surgery at Boston Children's Hospital and has been the Associate Residency Program Director since 2002 and the Residency Program Director since 2004.
