Kwonmoo Lee, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Surgery, Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Kwonmoo Lee is an expert in machine learning and cell biology, with a particular focus on how subcellular morphodynamic heterogeneity impacts cell motility in both healthy and pathological conditions. After earning his Ph.D. in physics from MIT, Dr. Lee went on to complete postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School. He then held an assistant professor position at Worcester Polytechnic Institute before joining the Vascular Biology Program at Boston Children's Hospital and the Department of Surgery at Harvard Medical School in 2020. Dr. Lee's research aims to develop new machine learning methods to better understand the mechanisms driving cell behavior and function. Hyung Joon Kim, Ph. D., Senior Staff Scientist. Hyung Joon Kim was trained as a neuroscientist in Rusty Gage’s lab at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies after he earned a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from the University of California at Irvine. His prior position was faculty at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He has studied the critical role of stem cells in the brain and vasculature by manipulating hiPSCs in microfluidics. His research focuses on understanding the alterations in cellular dynamics from healthy to pathological conditions by integrating stem cell biology, live-cell imaging, and machine learning.
Tzu-Hsi Song, Ph.D., Research Fellow. Dr. Tzu-Hsi Song earned his Ph.D.degree in Computer Science from University of Warwick, UK in 2017. Then, he was a postdoctoral fellow in Computer Science, University of Warwick and in the School of Dentistry, University of Birmingham, UK. He joined Lee Lab in March 2020 and he is developing a deep learning-based breast cancer diagnosis system using images from lensless digital inline holographic imaging systems. His research interest includes image processing, machine learning, and deep learning, and their applications for medical diagnosis.
Daehyung Kim, Ph. D., Research Fellow. Dr. Daehyung Kim earned his Ph.D. degree in Physics with single-molecule biophysics studies from Pohang University of Science and Technology, South Korea. He joined Lee Lab in Dec 2020. He focuses on applying deep learning to dissect the heterogeneity of cellular morphodynamics and mechanobiology. Also, he is working on analyzing morphodynamics of megakaryocytes using deep learning.
Abdurrahman Abul-Basher, Ph. D., Research Fellow. Dr. Abul-Basher is an expert in processing and analyzing metagenomic sequence data to reconstruct metabolic pathways (or subnetworks) and to discover the structure and diversity of microbial communities. He obtained his Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada. Prior to joining Lee Lab, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Hallam's Lab at Life Sciences Institute at UBC. He also worked at Canada's Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre for more than two years to analyze large-scale PubMed articles using natural language processing methods. His primary research interests include metagenomic data analysis, graph and network mining, privacy-preserving healthcare informatics and human metagenome, understanding and modeling protein interactions to optimize drug discovery, and elucidating the cell phenotypic transition dynamics from live-cell images and high-dimensional gene expression data (e.g., transcriptomics and proteomics) across human tissues.
