Sila Kurugol is an Assistant Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and a principal investigator at Computational Radiology Lab (CRL). She received her B.S., M.S. and PhD degrees all in electrical and computer engineering in Middle East Technical University, Bilkent University, Ankara Turkey and Northeastern University in Boston, MA, USA respectively. Dr. Kurugol’s research is focused on machine learning and computational techniques for improved quantitative imaging in abdomen and machine learning techniques for automated analysis of medical images and extraction of imaging markers. She developed accurate, robust and motion-compensated quantitative imaging techniques for diffusion weighted imaging and dynamic contrast enhanced imaging in particular. Dr. Kurugol has recently received Caffey Award for Best Science Paper at Society of Pediatric Radiology (SPR) Meeting in Nashville, May 2018 and Summa Cum Laude Award from International Society of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (ISMRM) in 2019. Her work has been supported by several grants including SPR young investigator grant 2016, Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation Career Development Award 2017-2020, AGA-Boston Scientific Technology and Innovation Pilot Award 2018, Boston Children’s Hospital Translational Research program Pilot Grant 2018 and SPR Multi-center Grant in 2019. Dr. Kurugol’s current projects include automated algorithms to extract robust and accurate imaging markers of Crohn’s disease, motion-robust, high spatiotemporal resolution imaging and image analysis techniques for accurate measurement of renal function and developing efficient and robust deep learning techniques for image analysis using active learning, crowd-sourcing, semi-supervised learning and uncertainty quantification techniques.
